Market Highlights
- Equity markets started the year on a strong note as the S&P 500 hit new highs, and International and Small Cap stocks saw major advances.
- The S&P 500 was up +1.45% for the month despite some rotation away from Mag 7 stocks.
- US Small Caps rose +5.35% measured by the Russell 2000 and enjoyed a stretch of outperformance relative to US Large Cap which has been rare in recent years.
- S&P 500 sector performance was led by Energy (+14.43%), which benefitted from increased oil prices. Materials, Consumer Staples, and Industrials also jumped as signs of market rotation grew.
- The Russell 1000 Value (+4.56%) benefitted from market rotation and far outpaced the Russell 1000 Growth (-1.53%) in January.
- Emerging Markets (+8.85%) benefitted from South Korean companies and Developed International equities (+5.22%) enjoyed a strong month as overseas allocations continued to provide a boost to US-based investors.
- The Fed held rates steady in January, and the administration announced Kevin Warsh as the nominee for the next Fed chair. The 10-year Treasury yield saw little movement for the month, and the Bloomberg US Agg was slightly positive with a +0.11% gain in January.
